# Chat & AI Assistant

> Use the AI-powered chat panel in the Kodexa workspace to ask questions, request document processing, and get help from your project's channel agent.

The workspace includes an AI-powered chat interface that connects to your project's channel agent. Use it to ask questions, request document processing, and get assistance with data review.

## Using the Chat Pane

The chat pane appears on the far right of the workspace. When a chat session is active, the workspace switches to an equal-thirds layout — documents on the left, data forms in the center, and the chat pane on the right — giving you full context while conversing with the AI.

You can:

* **Ask questions** about the current document or extracted data
* **Request processing** — Ask the assistant to run specific operations
* **Get help** with data review and validation
* **Discuss** findings with the AI in the context of your project

### Collapsing the Chat List

The list of chats beside the conversation can be collapsed with the hide/show control in the list header. Collapsed, it becomes a narrow rail that keeps the new-chat control and your existing chats — shown as initials, with the active chat highlighted — one click away, while the conversation takes the reclaimed width, so a narrow panel dock still leaves room to read and reply. Your collapsed or expanded choice is remembered per task or project workspace in your browser.

## Automatic Chat Prompts

Task templates can be configured to **automatically start a chat session** when a user opens a task. This sends a pre-configured prompt to the AI assistant, providing immediate, context-aware guidance.

When enabled, the automatic chat prompt:

1. Opens the chat panel automatically when the task is opened
2. Creates a new channel scoped to the task
3. Sends the template prompt with task variables substituted (task title, documents, assignee, etc.)
4. Displays the message collapsed as **"Requesting task assistance..."** — click the expand icon to view the full prompt
5. The AI assistant responds with tailored guidance

If a chat session already exists for the task, the existing conversation is shown instead of creating a new one.

### Configuring Automatic Chat Prompts

Automatic chat prompts are configured on the **Chat Prompt** tab of the [Task Template Editor](https://developer.kodexa.ai/studio/project/task-templates#ai-chat-prompt). You define a prompt template with variable placeholders like `{taskTitle}`, `{documentFamilyPaths}`, and `{assignee}` that are filled in with actual task data at runtime.

> [!TIP]
>
> Automatic chat prompts are a great way to onboard new team members to a workflow — the AI provides step-by-step guidance when they open each task, based on the specific documents and data they need to review.

## Agent Processing Status

When the AI assistant is processing a request, a status indicator shows the current processing state. This helps you understand what the assistant is doing and when results are ready.

## Assistants Panel

The Assistants panel in the left sidebar provides access to assistant configuration, including training mode for improving AI performance.

## Channel Panel

The Channel panel provides access to messaging channels scoped to the project or the current task. Channels support team communication alongside AI-assisted interactions.

> [!TIP]
>
> Use the chat assistant to quickly validate extracted data. Ask it to check specific fields against the source document or to explain why certain values were extracted.

## Companion Agent Configuration

The AI assistant's capabilities — which modules it can use as tools, what prompt guides its behavior, and which runtime powers it — are configured at the project and task template level. See [Companion Agent](https://developer.kodexa.ai/studio/project/companion-agent) for details on configuring the companion agent.
